COMPETITION 17TH JUNE 2007 – ALL SAINTS SPORTS CENTRE
The Wizards had a good turn out for the tournament at All Saints. The squad was:
Hollie Barton
Cameron Bow
Ross Cowton
George Darling
Joe Frith
William Hurbert
Katy Jones
Jacob Moore
George Naylor
Joel Renburg-Fawcett
Marcus Welsh
All the team played really well especially as there was a large turnover of players for each match and of the uncertainty amongst the teams about who was playing when. However this didn’t dampen the commitment and enthusiasm of everyone and we would like to say a big thank you to players, parents and supporters.
Featured Matches
Wizards versus Hawks
This was the first match of the tournament and the Wizards got of to a flying start. The first 5 players were George D, Ross, George N, Hollie and Joel and within 2 minutes baskets from George N and George D opened up a 4-0 lead.
The Hawks managed a quick reply but another basket from George D restored a 4 point lead at 6-2.
Again the Hawks replied with a basket but Ross matched this with a basket for the Wizards keeping the lead at 8-4.
There was a team change around and the 5 players on the court were Marcus, Cameron, Jacob, William and Joe. Whilst they were settling down the Hawks closed the gap to 8-6. Katy came on to replace Cameron and whilst adjusting to the changes Hawks nipped in to draw level at 8-8.
With 2 minutes left the Hawks crept in front but this spurred on the Wizards who lay siege to the Hawks basket. Both the parents, the team and coach cheered on the team to try and level the match, but after coming close on many occasions the time ran out.
The final score was Wizards 8, Hawks 10.
Wizards versus Harriers
The match started with George D, Joe, Hollie, Cameron and Marcus.
The match was an even affair but with the Harriers getting baskets after 2 and 4 minutes to take a 4 nil lead. For the next 5 minutes though the Wizards dominated the match. Cameron thought he’d got some points on the board but unfortunately he hadn’t heard the whistle. Katy, George N and Jacob came on and continued to apply the pressure. Then Ross also joined in the attack. The wizard’s work rate was rewarded when George N got a basket and was also fouled whilst shooting. This lead to a free throw and the Wizards had 3 points on the board.
With the score at 3-4 the Wizards were one basket away from victory. William and Joel came on the help the cause.
Unfortunately the Harriers started to put some moves together and with just under 2 minutes left managed to grab a basket. They kept possession and robbed the Wizards of their chance of victory.
The final score was Wizards 3, Harriers 6.
